My Definition of a Hero

A hero comes in many forms. The dictionary version talks about a mythological figure who does good deeds and saves the day. But the hero's of today are real people. People who go above and beyond the call of duty in a time of need. People who listen and guide us through our troubled times. People who selflessly give a part of themselves to help others in need. Hero's are also those who are sick, may not have much time left on this earth and through all of that, they fight to make the most of their lives and the lives of others around them.

To you, a hero may be the firefighter who saved your family and home. Maybe a teacher who has given you that special one-on-one to help you further your education. Or it may be a special someone who has dedicated their life helping animals in need.

Hero's are everywhere...they come in all shapes & sizes, colors, are young and old and are rich and poor. There is a hero on every corner of this earth, on every street, in every town and in every family.

My definition of a hero may also be represented as Angels on earth. Angels who are here to watch over us, give us a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with and a warm hug just when we need it most. Angels are the hand of the doctor performing critical surgery or the construction worker rebuilding homes after a natural disaster. They gently take the hand of our friend who will wipe away our tears when we lose a loved one.

Hero's can also come in the form of our parents; the ones who have molded and shaped the people we have become. The ones who love us unconditionally. The ones who were there for us from the very start. Hero's are our spouse, the one true love of our life, the one who makes us laugh, gives us butterflies in our stomach when we see them come into the room and the one who shares the good and bad with us. And then their are the children...the true Angels on this earth. They love us when we are at our worst, bless us with hand picked flowers and cards that they have colored for us. When we are down, a simple hug and I Love You from these beautiful Angels is what keeps the light alive inside. We are surrounded by hero's and Angels who make big differences and small differences...but every little bit touches our heart.

Angels and hero's deserve to be recognized for all the good they do in this world. This holiday season is a time to recognized the hero in your life. Nominate your hero today!

Angels Among Us (performed by Alabama)

I was walking home from school on a cold winter day.
Took a shortcut through the woods, and I lost my way.
It was getting late, and I was scared and alone.
But then a kind old man took my hand and led me home.
Mama couldnt see him, but he was standing there.
And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers.

Oh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.

When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees.
Theres always been someone there to come along and comfort me.
A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand.
A phone call from a friend, just to say I understand.
And aint it kind of funny that at the dark end of the road.
Someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope.

Oh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.

They wear so many faces, show up in the strangest places.
To guide us with their mercy, in our time of need.

Oh I believe there are angels among us.
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours.
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.
To guide us with a light of love.

To guide us with a light of love.
